What to Pack for the Fjords

  • A waterproof, windproof jacket with a hood.
  • Layers: a fleece or warm sweater, long trousers, a light hat and gloves for deck.
  • Comfortable, grippy walking shoes for wet paths and hikes.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: long days and reflections off the water add up.
  • A sleep mask for the light summer nights.
  • Binoculars for waterfalls, farms and wildlife.

Winter: Northern Lights Voyages

Once the summer cruise season ends, a different kind of voyage begins. In the dark months, ships sailing the coast of northern Norway offer the chance to see the aurora borealis, along with snowy landscapes, husky and reindeer excursions and very short days. These voyages are a different trip from a summer fjords cruise: colder, darker and focused on the far north. If they appeal, ask us which sailings are available.

For a summer comparison between the fjords, the Baltic and Iceland, see Cruising Scandinavia.

Shoulder Season: May and September

The edges of the season have their own appeal. In May, snowmelt sends the waterfalls into full flood and the peaks are still white above green valleys; orchards in the Hardangerfjord area may be in blossom. September brings the first autumn color on the hillsides, quieter villages and a calmer pace in port. The trade-offs are cooler temperatures, more chance of rain and, in September, shorter days, so some scenic sailing may happen in twilight. For travelers who prefer fewer people and do not mind packing an extra layer, these months can be the best time of all.

Weather and Season Questions

Does it rain a lot on a fjords cruise?

It can. Western Norway, and Bergen in particular, is known for rain in every season. Showers come and go quickly, so pack a waterproof jacket and enjoy the waterfalls they feed.

Can I see the northern lights on a cruise to Norway?

Not on a summer cruise, because the nights are too light. Northern lights voyages along the Norwegian coast run in the dark months, roughly autumn to early spring, and sightings are never guaranteed.
